English to Sinhala document translation: a practical guide
Translate English documents into Sinhala with a clear workflow for names, numbers, formatting and review. Learn what to prepare before uploading.
Start with the document, not a sentence
English to Sinhala translation for a document needs more than a readable sentence. A letter, agreement or certificate has names, dates, headings and relationships between sections that must remain consistent. Start by deciding who will read the finished document and what they need to do with it.
For a short phrase, a text translation tool may be enough to help you understand the meaning. For a complete document, work from the full source so the translation can be checked in context. If the receiving organisation asks for a signed translation, choose the appropriate review service before committing to the final copy.
Prepare a source that can be checked
Use the clearest complete version you have. A cropped photograph can hide an endorsement or a date at the edge. Keep pages in their original order and include the reverse side when it contains relevant text.
If the source is already a Word document, keep the original file. Repeatedly converting it between screenshots and PDFs makes comparison harder. When uploading a scan, check that small print, stamps and handwritten additions are readable.
- Check that every page belongs to the same document.
- Provide the spelling of names already used in related records.
- Identify handwritten or unclear passages for review rather than guessing.
Review names, meaning and structure separately
First compare the main meaning paragraph by paragraph. Then make a separate pass for names, addresses, amounts, dates and reference numbers. A translation can sound fluent while still carrying a misplaced digit or an inconsistent name.
For example, if the original repeats a person’s full name in a heading and signature block, compare both occurrences. If an amount appears as digits and words, check both representations. Keep the original visible while reviewing tables so that a value does not become associated with the wrong heading.
Use the translation workflow that fits your purpose
On Translate, add your document and choose English as the source and Sinhala as the target. Review the draft alongside the original, check the available quote and review options, and choose how to continue.
A digital seal records the draft as it stands. It is different from a sworn translator reviewing, correcting and signing the translation. Confirm the receiving organisation’s requirements before choosing. You can also use the same document workflow for Sinhala to English by selecting the opposite language direction.
